Marina di Camerota in the heart of the Cilento

A jewel in the heart of the Cilento

Surrounded by the natural beauty of Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, a World Heritage Site and biosphere reserve, Marina di Camerota is also known as “the pearl of the Cilento”. This coastal holiday resort boasts crystal-clear waters and stands in a prime location, in a natural setting between the hills of the Cilento and Mediterranean scrubland.

Its beautiful beaches, which for many years have been awarded Blue Flag certification, as well as other international awards, are the ideal destination for tourists and popular with diving enthusiasts.

Calanca is a beach where the sea is shallower, making it ideal for families with children. From here it is easy to see the Island of Marina di Camerota.

Marina delle Barche is a beach with very fine sand near the old town centre, easy to reach on foot in about 10 minutes.

Lentiscelle is ideal for those who prefer beaches covered in small pebbles.

Mingardo is a series of beaches that stretch for 7 km and famed for the depths of its sea beds; it is situated along the road that links Marina di Camerota and Palinuro and is ideal for swimmers.

According to legend, the name of this place comes from Kamaratòn, a young girl who was as beautiful as a goddess. Palinurus, the legendary helmsman of Aeneas, fell head over heels in love with her. However, she did not feel the same, so he tried to capture her image reflected in the sea. Angered by the cruelty of the beautiful Kamaratòn, the Goddess of Love turned her into a rock and left her for all eternity gazing onto that same sea in which Palinurus tried to capture her.

As well as being the ideal holiday destination, Camerota is a jewel of art and architecture. It’s a delight to wander its narrow streets, topped with arches, and gaze at ancient palaces and churches, like Santa Maria delle Grazie, San Daniele Profeta, San Nicola, the church of the Capuchin Monastery and the Chapel of San Gennaro and del Carmine. Around the streets of the centre, it is also interesting to watch the skill of local artisans as they work with terracotta and wicker. And the local food specialities are well worth discovering too.

Just outside the village, it is possible to take splendid walks along paths surrounded by nature. The panoramic views that can be admired from the hills are ideal for taking photographs and breathing in the breath-taking sea, sun and blue skies.
